We invite you to join us for our traditional yearly Taino Winter Solstice Ceremony.

We will be honoring the re-conception of our Indigenous Caribbean Life Spirit

Yoka Hu. During this season we celebrate the

conclusion of his journey to the Underworld realm of the ancestors at the womb

of the Cosmic Mother Ata Bey.

There will be traditional Taino chants to the rythm of the mayohuakan drum and

the ceremonial Shark Dance and the event will

culminate with food communing. Plan to bring your covered dish to share with your

brothers and sisters.

Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance is a multi-generational performing company bonded

together like a family. We are holding auditions during the month of January for

Dancers and Musicians for our Adult and Junior Companies, to share the joy and

liveliness of the Puerto Rican people, and the color and richness of our beautiful

heritage throughout the year.

Professional-Level Company - Dance & Music Auditions

DANCERS & ACTORS:

Are you passionate about dancing and/or acting? We are looking for entry-level

adults, males and females, with outstanding, raw-dance talent, vibrant stage

presence, and natural acting-ability who wish to be trained for company membership.

Previous knowledge of a latin/folkloric dance style and formal acting skills

helpful but not required. If you like to dance and sing and act, all at the same

time, you will especially enjoy our live music and dance performances that tell

stories based in our cultural heritage. Specifically we are looking for:

* strong, latin dance talent and dynamic stage presence

* natural acting skills

* high level of energy and joyful enthusiasm

* ability to recreate the essence of our distinct traditional dance styles

* quick learners with good memory for complex material

* serious commitment to attend regular classes and rehearsals

* team spirit

MUSICIANS:

Do you enjoy music that represents the soul of a people? Puerto Rican music is

diverse, featuring a wide variety of singing-styles and instruments including

acoustic guitars, cuatro and accordion players, large and small percussion,

strings, horns, winds, and more! We are auditioning advanced and professional-level

musicians, who have a talent for playing music by ear, and enjoy challenging

themselves as artists and developing new skills. If you play multiple instruments

you will have added fun!

YOUTH PERFORMING COMPANY (Dance & Music)

PRFDance's Youth Company is the training ground for our adult professional-level

performing company of dancers and musicians.

DANCERS:

PRFDance is holding auditions for advanced youth dancers interested in being

trained to perform with our Youth Performing Company. This fast-paced dance program

is targeted for advanced youth who are ready to mature their dance-skills towards a

level expected of our Professional Company, and gain exciting performance

experience beyond an annual recital. Natural acting ability a plus!

MUSIC:

If your child plays an instrument very advanced for his/her years, this program

gives unique opportunity to learn traditional Puerto Rican compositions and perform

with our company musicians. As segments of Puerto Rico's traditional music are not

in written form, this program will develop his/her talent for playing music by ear.

Hello, everyone!

I was contacted by the El Museo Indigena de Parque de las Ciencias Municipio de Bayamon last week to provide images for their exhibits.

Here is what they need:

Tenemos 3 monitores los cuales necesitamos lo siguiente, Monitor 1, exhibit 2 every day life, art, areitos de el Taino y su arte areytos, playing mayohuacan and in the plaza playing batu, hunting and fishing Monitor 2, exhibit 2 behique and everything related to the ritual of the cahoba

Monitor 3 funeral and burial practices

Nine images minimum per model. These will be displayed via slide show format. Images will become a permanent fixture in the museum and may be used for Museum advertising, promotion and on their web site.

I will need a minimum of 20 models. This is for a museum and as such the models will be required to pose nude/semi nude/implied nude.

All food will be provided. The museum will pay a $25 stipend per model per day. I need to submit the names of models who are present to get the stipends approved. The majority of models will be needed for one day of shooting. A few will be needed for other days.

Model releases are required and will need to be signed prior to shooting the images. Prefer people with dark/very tanned skin and long black hair. If you have short hair but have access to a wig, that's acceptable.

More Info La Fundación Cultural Educativa (FCE), en colaboración con el Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe (CEAPRC), presentará el simposio Quinto Centenario de la Rebelión Taína en Puerto Rico (1511-2011). Este memorable evento se llevará a cabo en el Aula Magna del CEAPRC, el 18 y 19 de febrero de 2011.

El propósito fundamental de este simposio es conmemorar los cinco siglos de la rebelión taína en Puerto Rico por m...edio de una serie de conferencias. Se enfocará el tema desde una perspectiva de su valor histórico, social, económico y religioso. Este significativo hecho histórico fue el resultado del choque de dos mundos, de la explotación del indígena por la encomienda y la economía minera del conquistador. A la vez, el alzamiento indígena tuvo como consecuencia la rebelión de los dominicos con el sermón de fray Antón de Montesinos en Santo Domingo a finales de ese año, todo lo cual produjo una alegada revisión del sistema de la encomienda. Por todo ello, la trascendencia de la rebelión taína es una fecha histórica que no debe olvidarse.

El viernes 18 a las 7:30 p.m. será la noche inaugural-coctel con una conferencia magistral "La rebelión taína de 1511: Una visión retrospectiva”

por el Dr. Luis González Vales, Presidente de la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Historia y Presidente de la Junta de Síndicos del CEAPRC, y la conferncia "La rebelión taína: Crónicas de una guerra negada" por el Arqlo. Miguel Riodríguez López, rector del Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe.Para la ocasión la Sociedad Numismática pondrá en circulación una moneda alusiva a la rebelión taína.

El sábado 19, desde la 8:30 a.m. y durante todo el día, se presentarán una serie de interesantes ponencias* alusivas al tema.

Como parte del XXXIV Festival de Teatro del Ateneo se llevará a cabo la SEGUNDA MUESTRA DE JOVEN DRAMATURGIA PUERTORRIQUEÑA DEL ATENEO. En esta ocasión se estrena la pieza titulada Agüeybaná El Bravo, del dramaturgo puert...orriqueño Ricardo Magriñá Vélez, desde el viernes, 3 de junio a las 8:30 PM en el Teatro del Ateneo.

Ubicada en el contexto del comienzo de la colonización de Puerto Rico y el levantamiento indígena de 1511, la obra de teatro Agüeybaná El Bravo presenta el conflicto entre el cacique Agüeybaná El Viejo, quien auspicia la convivencia con los recién llegados invasores españoles y el hombre a quien la historia conocería como Agüeybaná El Bravo quien auspicia la toma de armas y la defensa de la patria ante los abusos de estos.

La pieza conmemora el V Centenario de este levantamiento que marca el inicio de una larga historia de resistencia puertorriqueña en contra de la opresión y la tiranía de los poderes mundiales que han llegado a nuestras costas buscando someternos a sus designios y su poderío.

Es además la primera obra de larga duración escrita por el Dramaturgo Puertorriqueño Ricardo Magriñá Vélez cuyo proyecto es parte de la Carrera de Dramaturgia que ejerce en el Ateneo Puertorriqueño.

El elenco de la misma está compuesto por Rolo Reyes como Agüeybaná El Bravo, Zulaika Ginés, Nelson Alvarado, Israel Solla, Antonio Rivera Malavé, Carlos Piñero, Emilio Graciano, Andrés López Sierra y Luis Javier Lopez, quien en es también el director de la pieza, como Agüeybaná el Viejo.

Las funciones de Agüeybaná El Bravo se llevarán a cabo viernes 3 y 10, sábado 4 y 11 a las 8:30 p.m. y domingos 5 y 12 de junio de 2011, las 4:30 p.m., en el TEATRO DEL ATENEO en San Juan. No se hacen reservaciones.

Agüeybaná El Bravo es parte del XXXIV Festival de Teatro del Ateneo dedicado al primer intelectual puertorriqueño negro, Don Eleuterio Derkes Martinó.
